Oral Anticoagulation

Oral anticoagulants have a narrow therapeutic range and the response to a standard dose varies widely both between patients and within patients over time. Changes in patient health, lifestyle or diet can effect changes in the action of the medication. Therefore, patients undergoing oral anticoagulant therapy must have their level of anticoagulation monitored frequently, with dosage adjustment as needed to ensure maximum safety and efficacy.



If the dose is too low, the risk of unwanted clot formation increases.

If the dose is within the therapeutic range, the desired amount of anticoagulation effect is achieved, reducing the chances of unwanted clot formation.

If the dose is too high, the coagulation mechanisms in the blood are shut down too severely and there is heightened risk of internal and external bleeding episodes.

A Prothrombin Time (PT) test can help determine the correct dosage for patients taking oral anticoagulants.
